JOHN CARROLL McCOLLOR, SR
b. 7/16/1843 or 1847* in Maine (or Canada?). Civil War vet, Farmer, son of Patrick McCollor and Nancy McCollor.
m. 9/__1872 or 1874 (1900 US census) in Bingham to MARY ELLEN MAHONEY dau. of PHILLIP (abt 1817 - 9/20/1905 b. Ireland) AND MARY A. AMBROSE MAHONEY (abt. 1830 - 12/9/1914, b. Georgia (Canada?))  b. 1/24/1853 at Cranbourne, Quebec, Canada immigrated 1870. d. (1/20/1897 from some resources, grave gives correct date of death: 3/2/1915 , aged 62, unless catalogger of cem. made a mistake?) at Bingham, ME. Kept house. * 1880 census of Bingham, ME . Mary Ellen's name in some records is reversed to Ellen Mary, including the 1900 US Federal Census.

In the 1910 census their last name is erroneously spelled "McCollam", a reminder that many records depend on the handwriting of the person recording it. Unfortunately, in that same census record, Mark or Marcus' name is spelled "March"!

Research Note: the US 1920 Census lists 76 year old John living in the Bingham household of his son-in-law James McKenney, daughter Bridget, and their small children.

Philip, Sr., and Mary Ann Ambrose Mahoney,

parents to MARY ELLEN, Philip, Jr., and Michael Mahoney. They were both born in St. Edouard de Frampton, PQ. They walked, following the river with their children, as many other ancesters did, from Frampton and Cranborne to Bingham about 1867. They purchased land and settled in Bingham on what is still Mahoney Hill. (Information courtesy Doris Mahoney).

DEATH OF BARNEY

(photo of old promotional post card/greeting) Pictured is the Bingham Hotel, which was built in 1822. The March 23, 1952 fire was not the first fire on the property, but was the most devastating and tragic. The first fire in 1929 destroyed the stables and all things inside. The 1952 fire destroyed the hotel, and tragically claimed the life of two employees, one of which was Barney, as well as that of two unfortunate guests.

LINEAGE CHART

How to use this chart: I am a person who remembers and undertands data that is laid out graphically rather than text outline. There are many good family tree templates out there that use a chronological text outline, but I have chosen here to do it the old fashioned way. Where you see a name that has been turned into a link, you will know that I have created a lineage page for this person, and you may click on that link to access that page.

Children of John & Mary Ellen
Grandchildren & Great Grandchildren of John & Mary Ellen
NANCY A. McCOLLOR
b. 11/14/1873 at Solon, ME
d. 12/5/1941 at the age of 68 in Caratunk, ME both buried at Bingham Village Cemetery.
m. 7/18/1897 at Bingham, ME to WILLIAM BERRY WHORFF stage driver. son of CHARLES WHORFF (1845 -  5/18/1905) AND JANE (1851 - 1/7/1911) HOLDEN  b. 10/2/1873, in Bingham, ME, d. 3/__/1949 at Bingham, ME

Research note: the 1900 census finds 24 year old Nancy (pregnant with her first child?) living with her parents in Bingham with no mention of her husband William. If the marriage date of 1897 is correct, perhaps they were separated for a time? Perhaps he was working out of town? Oddly, her maiden name is listed, not her married name.
Charles registered for the draft at the age of 44. The card lists his profession as Mail Carrier of the US Post Office, Caratunk, ME. Nancy is listed as his nearest relative. He is described as having "medium" height, medium build, with blue eyes and red hair.

ALTA JANE WHORFF
b. 12/31/1900, at Bingham, ME  Teacher.
d. 2/22/1983 at Bingham at the age of 82, buried Village Cemetery in Bingham next to parents and Emil.
m. 10/28/1943 to EMIL CHESTER ANDREWS  of Solon, at Caratunk, ME, b. 2/24/1900 son of MELVIN H. AND MAE (OR MARY?) G. ANDREWS. d. 12/30/1955.

Research Notes: 1920 census' - Alta is living in her parent's home in Caratunk, ME. By 1930 she is a "roomer" in the Henry and Anna Kelley residence, Beverly, MA. When, at 42 years old she finally marries for the first time (?), she is quite a rarity and probably considered an "old maid" by society. Her late marriage after a career in teaching and his death at a relatively young age, perhaps explains her never having any children. Interestingly, her sisters all taught school and all married relatively older than "norm".

Emil: In the 1920 census, 19 year old Emil is listed as a laborer, his father was a clothing store merchant. At the time of the 1930 census, 30 year old Emil was still living at home and was then working as a clerk. Just like his future wife, Emil waited longer than the then norm before marrying. See Emil's WWI draft registration above, dated 1918, where he is listed as a laborer at the International Paper Co. in Emden, ME. He is described as medium height and build with brown hair and blue eyes. He gives his father as his nearest living relative.

CALLA MILDRED WHORFF
b. 7/23/1902, at Bingham, ME.
d. 8/24/1993 (at Naples, ME?)
m. 6/26/1943 to THERON ROUNDS (SSDI: b. 5/19/1909, d. 8/__/1993). no children?
Research notes:  Calla was a well-liked school teacher after graduating from Farmington State Normal School. She taught in Dixfied for 20 years, and then Naples
ELIZABETH ELLEN WHORFF
b. 9/4/1903, at West Forks, ME
d. 6/5/1968, buried at Bingham Village Cemetery. at the age of 65.
m(1). ? at ? to RANDALL?
m(2). 6/28/1934 to KENNETH S. RUSSELL. b. 7/14/1905, at Caratunk, son of BENJAMIN & GERTRUDE POOLER RUSSELL. Construction worker and mechanic d. suddenly 5/21/1951 at the age of 45 at Bingham. See above for his obituary, and for the obituaries of his parents.
m(3). 12/17/1952 to CLYDE E. STAPLES of Jay, Maine, son of ______ (dates unconfirmed) b.? d.?

Research notes: in Kenneth Russell's obituary no children are mentioned. A strange thing I found:  Maine marriage index has two records for this marriage, one provides an odd name for Elizabeth: Elizabeth Bubier. Wedding date is the same so I think this is our Clyde and Elizabeth??
CHARLES JOHN WHORFF
b. 10/2/1911, at Caratunk, ME  (enlisted in Army WWII?)
d. 10/13/1977 in Bingham, ME (SS Death index gives a death date of Oct. 2nd).
Research notes: Charles enlisted in the Army 4/2/1942 and served as a private in WWII. According to the enlistment he is described as having 4 years of high school, and his pre-war profession was a "semiskilled chauffer and drivers, bus, taxi, truck and tractor. He was single in '42, 5'5", and 160 lbs.
never married.

MARCUS "MARK"  McCOLLOR
Many resources I've found show Mark to be his legal name, including his grave stone, not Marcus.
b. 2/16/1876, at Bingham, ME. laborer, American Shoe, lumber yard, teamster, in 1930 lived James St., Bingham. Described in his WWI draft card (at age 42 in Sept. 1918, see copy of it above) as having med. height, med. build, blue eyes, black hair.
d. 5/31/1934 at Bingham at the age of 58. Buried with Jennie at Bingham Village Cemetery.
m. JENNIE H. HEALEY  11/24/1910 (or 1909?) at Solon, ME  dau. of NATHANIEL AND MARY JANE (MATSON) HEALEY b. 5/6/1887 at at Concord, ME d. 7/4/1973 at Bingham at the age of 86. both Healeys are buried at Bingham Union Cemetery.

RESEARCH NOTE: the 1920 census finds Marcus' family living in a rented home in Bingham.

ELBY McCOLLOR
b. 12/7/1910 at Bingham, ME
d. 1/25/1911 at Bingham, ME

MARITA "RETA" M. McCOLLOR
b. 12/30/1911, at Bingham, ME
d. 9/16/1966 at Boston, MA. buried at Bingham Union Cemetery
m. 3/14/1934 to KARL HOLT (HOZENFELD), b.12/8/1893? (SSDI) in Germany. d. 7/1/1966 (? SSDI) Gardner, MA.

Research Notes:

The 1930 census shows Reta as a student nurse in Boston, MA at a children's hospital. It must have been exciting for an 18 year old girl from a very small rural Maine town to move to a big city for school. Romance with a young European man must have been icing on the cake.

There is a grave stone for Karl alongside Reta in family plots at Bingham Village Cemetery, however, other sources claim him buried at Boston, MA. There were no children of this marriage.
MERLE ELLIOTT McCOLLOR, SR.
b. 6/30/1917, at Bingham, ME .  PFC USA WWII
d. 1/28/1987 in Waterville, ME buried at Village Cemetery, Bingham, see the Cemetery probject for photos I took of the markers.
m. 7/27/1940 (or 7/17/1939?) at Bingham to METHYL V. MOULTON b. 7/21/1924 at Moscow, ME. d. living, resides in "the McCollor House" the same home where Merle was born.  (Thank you, Merle Jr. for providing the correct information). There is a stone for her at Bingham to be buried alongside Merle.

Research notes: When Merle enlisted in the Army during WWII on April 24, 1945, his birth date is given as 1915, not 1917. He  enlisted as a private "for the duration of the war...", his occupation is given as "carpenter" and he had completed 4 years of high school.

MERLE ELLIOTT McCOLLOR, JR.
b. 11/28/1940 At Waterville, ME

Research notes: the 1930 census of Bingham shows Nellie and her family living next door to her younger brother, John, in a home they owned, valued at $4,000. It's hard to read, but I think it says Charles was a horse man for a lumber co., son Clyde an employee of the railroad(?) and daughter Jennie a bank clerk. Clyde is listed as married but no wife is listed in the household. Son Hazen, only 17, is a steam piper in dam construction. It appears the family was quite industrious.

RESEARCH NOTES ON FRANK:
In the 1920 census Frank is listed as a lodger in the home of Frank and Elizabeth McQuillan and their 7 children aged 10 and younder. If he was indeed married in 1917 as his draft card indicates, in 1920 he does not appear to be married any longer.

Two years earlier he had enlisted and then discharged from U.S. service. According to the 1921 publication "Somerset County in the World War" by Florence Waugh Danforth, Frank was a Private out of Camp Lewis, American Lake, WA. His trade is described as "woods and on the drive", and he joined up on October 7, 1918 only to be discharged in December 1918. I'll look for the actual record to clarify this, and post it here.

Update: I found his draft card, dated June 5th, 1917. He was living in Jarbridge, NV, and was at the time 28 years old, his birthdate given as March 5th, 1988. His profession is given as hotel proprietor, employed by "self" which to me indicates he owned the hotel. He lists a wife but does not provide her name. The card lists him as being tall with medium height, blue eyes and black hair.

BARNABY BERNARD (BARNEY) A. McCOLLOR
b. 3/8/1889 at Bingham, ME.  (while family records give the birth date of 1888, both the1900 census and his  WWI draft card give the birth year of 1889)
d. 3/25/1952 Died in a fire in Bingham - buried at the Village Cemetery at Bingham alongside parents.
m. 8/28/1915 at Anson, ME to VERNA EVELYN ROUNDY dau. of EDWIN & ADDIE (ADELAIDE?) ROUNDY  b. January 28(or 29?), 1898  d. March _?_ 1955 in Bingham.

RESEARCH NOTES ON BARNEY:

Evelyn and Barney divorced and did not have any children. In her obituary (see above) no mention is made of having married Barney although it appears she never remarried and kept his name.

Verna had a brother, GEORGE, who was a private in WWI, Co. E 103 US infantry. His trade was listed as "barber". In the 1930 census she is living with her mother Addie and Addie's (second?) husband, George Jones, in Bingham, and working as a telephone operator. Also living in the household is a 48 year old man named Percy LaSelle, brother to Addie, working as a rigger in dam construction.

We don't know alot about Barney, we do have some information from his WWI draft card. He registered in June 1917, and birth date given as March 8th, 1889, which differs a little from family records. His trade is given as "River driver" for the Kennebec Log Driving Co. He states that he is responsible for his father and for his wife. They describe him as being medium height and weight, with blue eyes and dark brown hair.

Barney is an interesting character I wish we knew more about him... it seemed he led a lonely life which ended tragically.  In 1930, at about 41 years old, he is listed in the census as a "roomer", living with a man named MAURICE H. CAHILL, 46, in Maurice's owned home in Bingham. Maurice is listed as having married at the age of 21, although no-one else lives in the household but the two men, and Barney as divorced. Barney is not employed and Maurice works in construction.
